Spiritual Reading

Therefore prepare your minds for action, discipline yourselves; ....

be holy yourselves in all your conduct for it is written,

"You shall be holy, for I am holy."   1 Peter 1:13, 15-16

Read Any Good Books Lately?

Spiritual reading is the practice of reading books and articles

which assist the reader to know , love, and serve God,

and thereby become more holy.

The purpose of our lives as Catholics is to become saints. Reading has indeed, made many saints. St Augustine heard the words “pick up and read”. He read the Gospel which changed his life and the course of Christianity as well. St. Anthony, after reading the story of the rich young man, felt compelled to follow Jesus’ invitation to “Sell all you have, give to the poor, and come follow me.” John Henry Newman read the Fathers of the Church and was converted to Catholicism. Stories abound about saints who were profoundly influenced by their spiritual reading.

The Bible is the all time best-seller and by far the most quoted book in history. It should be #1 on our list for spiritual reading. Consider reading the Bible for at least a few minutes each day.

Along with reading the Bible, spiritual reading may include Church teachings and history, lives of the Saints, meditations, prayers, and the many writings that inspire us to live as Catholic Christians. CD’s about spirituality are also an excellent way to hear God’s word.
